Dinner at Muar

Yesterday, my girlfriend brought up an idea to go Muar for dinner, as a form of relax :p Well, via the new Melaka – Muar state expressway (toll-free but with a few traffic light junctions along the way), it takes only 30 minutes to reach Muar from my house in Melaka.

So, let’s go for mini food hunting in Muar!

Before departure, we pumped the RM2.70 per liter petrol for the first time. Oouch! First time paying more than RM60 of petrol for Kelisa.

Jalan Haji Abu (hungry lane), Muar

The first stop was Jalan Haji Abu, or better known as the Muar Hungry Lane (wai sek kai in Cantonese). When the sun is setting to welcome the night, there will be a number of hawker stalls lining up by both sides of the 80m road, to satisfy your hungry stomach.

My gf eating wan tan mee at Muar hungry lane

When was your last time you actually ate like this? Sitting on a stool, right at the hawker stall, watching the hawker cook while you were eating. This was a very common scene when I was a kid, but no longer now. And yes, we did that at Muar :D

We had wan tan mee (云吞面) served in springy noodles, at RM 3. Quite a decent amount of cha siew was given.

Then, we left the wan tan mee stall, and hooped to the next neighboring stall for dessert. I must say, this dessert stall deserves many mentions!

Simple, this stall sells only 2 types of desserts (tong sui) – black glutinous rice (黑糯米) and mak zuk (麦粥 malt porridge), at RM 1.20 each. You can just say whether you want a black one (black glutinous rice), or a white (mak zuk) one :p Then, you can choose to add yao char kuai (油条 you cha kuay), which most people do, at additional charge of RM 0.30.

We ordered black glutinous rice with yao char kuai. Wah lao eh… it tasted very good. The dessert wasn’t not too sweet, just nice.

Lo hon kor drink at Muar hungry lane

Next, we bought the lo hon kor (罗汉果) drink, at RM 0.70.

Muar otak-otak

Come to Muar, how can you leave without eating otak-otak?

Chinese dumplings

Today is Dragon Boat Festival (Duan Wu), and thus there were quite a number of stalls yesterday selling dumplings (Zong Zi). When I asked this uncle whether I can photograph his stall, he generously replied “can can… take a few more pics”

Wah you see, just one stop, and we have already tasted so many drooling foods. If you’re particular about the dining environment, this is not a place for you though hehe. To me and my girlfriend, we did enjoy it very much.

That’s not all. Muar is known for its rojak too!

Just a distance of 1.5km away from Jalan Haji Abu, we went to riverside walkway of Muar River (Sungai Muar) at Jalan Petri. When we were about to reach there, something caught my eyes. It was a beautiful sunset, with a vibrant layer of orange color along the horizon!!! I ran towards the jetty, but sigh, the beautiful didn’t wait for me.

Oops, what does Muar River has to do with rojak??

Alai Rojak at Muar

Got la… we were there for rojak looo. When you’re at the riverside walkway, there are plenty of stalls selling rojak. Our preferred one is Alai Rojak, a Chinese stall (stall no. 4) found in the food court located at the garden.

Kangkung, sprouts, pineapple slices, mango slices, cucumber slices and tau fu pok topped with rojak sauce, at RM 1.80 each.
