Find Out Which Program is Using Internet Connection

At today’s age with Internet connection availability becoming a common lifestyle companion, it’s practically impossible for your computer not having any program unknowingly accessing Internet in the background, as long as your PC is connected to Internet.

Even if you’re not running any web browser, IM client (such as MSN, Yahoo! Messenger) and email checker, chances are there will still be some programs running background scheduled jobs to check for software updates.

So, how do you know which exact program is actually communicating to the Internet?

NetLimiter 2 - Monitor

I’m using NetLimiter 2. It’s available for Windows. The free version of NetLimiter 2 is featuring a simple monitoring tool, which is showing a listing of all programs currently requiring incoming or outgoing network connection.

Besides, you can also generate network traffic statistics of a program, for a particular date.

My Experience with Google Chrome Web Browser 0.2

In the recent few days, the tech world is excessively bombarded with 1 word – Chrome. At this moment, it’s quite unlikely for anyone not to have stumbled upon this word, unless you were not online during the past 3 days.

Just in case you are reading this post without any idea on what I am talking about, Google has already released a very early version of its web browser – named Google Chrome. We are now living with one more potentially-promising choice of web browser. On the downside, it’s only supporting Windows XP and Vista at this moment.

Google Chrome - About Google Chrome

Google Chrome is built on AppleWebKit foundation, the same engine currently used in Safari web browser.

Google Chrome - About Memory

This is the about:memory (type about:memory into Address Bar) page. The most interesting feature in Google Chrome, which is yet to be found in any other popular web browser, is its handling of each new tab as a new process.

Think of it in this analogy:
In other browsers (including but not limited to Firefox, IE and Opera), all passengers (tabs) are loaded into the same vehicle (process). So in the event of accident, all passengers in the vehicle will be affected.

On the other hand, Google Chrome uses a new vehicle (process) for each passenger (tab). So, even if a vehicle is crashed, only the passenger in this vehicle will be affected, while all other vehicles and passengers are safe and sound. Windows Vista is Outdated

When you think that the Windows Flip 3D effect in Windows Vista is the coolest desktop eye candy, wait till you see the amazing visual effects available on Ubuntu 8.04 with 3D effects powered by Compiz Fusion.

If you have never seen the breath-taking 3D effects available on Ubuntu 8.04, please watch the following YouTube clip, and I’m sure you will be immediately amazed with jaw-dropping reaction ;)

How to Enable Advanced 3D Effects on Ubuntu 8.04?

My Initial Experience with Ubuntu 8.04

I’ve recently formatted my home PC, made way for Ubuntu, and installed dual-boot with Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu 8.04. This time, I’ve made the Ubuntu 8.04 as the primary default boot, leaving Windows a secondary choice :p

FYI, my home PC is relatively old comparing to today’s de-facto standards. It’s running on Intel Prescott P4 2.0GHz processor with 512MB RAM and an on-board graphic card. This specification is a BIG NO to the resource-hungry Windows Vista.

Firstly, with Ubuntu installation CD, you can even boot and run the operating system from CD without installation. So, you can try out its compatibility with your computer and find reasons to convince yourself, before you commit to install it.

I’ve given my Ubuntu a 12GB partition, with 900MB swap area. It takes a set of very simple steps to install Ubuntu 8.04 with complete graphical interface. Yes, the installation is easy; it asks less questions comparing to Windows XP and Vista, and many configurations are automatically detected. For my case, it even prompts if I would like to import settings from Windows XP. Continue reading ‘Windows Vista is Outdated’

Firefox Spellchecker Not Working. How to Enable?

Before installing Firefox 3, I’ve uninstalled my Firefox 2 to prevent any unforeseen conflict. However, as I use it more, I find something missing.

No one is correcting my spelling mistake anymore! “Aiyo.. Inglish spelling mistake in email and bloc beli paiseh one le..”

So, what has gone wrong? Apparently, the English dictionary was removed; most probably, when I uninstalled the Firefox 2.

Firefox - "Add Dictionaries" Option in Context Menu

“Easy job lo.. dictionary missing ma install it back lo..”

  1. Right click on any textbox or multi-line text input control (such as Gmail email composition box).
  2. If no dictionary is installed, you will see the “Add Dictionaries…” option in the right-click context menu. Click on “Add Dictionaries…”, and you will be brought to the Firefox Dictionaries and Language Packs add-ons.
  3. Just select your preferred spellchecking language, such as English (US), and install the dictionary.
  4. After restart, spellchecker will start to function in Firefox.

By default, Firefox spellchecker is working on multi-line controls. If you want the spellchecker to work on single-line text field as well, do the following:

  1. Type about:config in your browser location bar.
  2. Accept the warning message if prompted.
  3. Search for layout.spellcheckDefault option, double click on it, and change its value to 2.

Firefox 3 RC2 in June

As cited at Mozilla Links, there will be a second release candidate (RC) for the next generation of Mozilla Firefox - Firefox 3. At present, Firefox 3 is released as release candidate 1 (RC1).

The Firefox 3 RC2 will include fixes for some top priority bugs causing crashes, performance inefficiency, and localization-releated issues. The RC2 is expected to be available for download in second week of June. Results of testing for Firefox 3 RC1 are available here.

I’m currently using Firefox 3 RC1, and I must say that I’m very happy with the overall experience. In oppose to installation of previous Firefox major RC upgrades, most of the Firefox plugins that I’m frequently using are already having latest releases compatible with Firefox 3, except Google Toolbar, Firebug (Firebug 1.2 Beta is compatible with Firefox 3) and All-in-One Gestures.

Firefox 3 includes a big bundle of notable new features and dramatic performance improvement (the fastest Firefox ever). Yes, go take a look at the Firefox 3 new features now, I’m sure you will find some interesting ones which will create excitement for you :D Continue reading ‘Firefox 3 RC2 in June’
