BN, Please Concentrate in Minimizing the Economical Aftermath of Petrol Hike

Yesterday, there were road blocks at many places of our highways in Peninsula Malaysia, especially the southern and central regions. Ya, Malaysia is so efficient in the utilization of police forces, and you can see neatly queued vehicles (wow.. so courteous, drivers dare not simply abuse the emergency lane also) at the highway speed lane. Friends, it was Sunday, the day when many people were traveling back from home sweet home to Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya for work.

This morning, if you’re working in KL or PJ, and if were driving to work, then congratulation, you have contributed in boosting national economic growth by consuming more fuel. Congratulation again, you have helped to prove that our police forces are efficient in conducting road block!

Why all these masses? Simply because BN “thought” there will be a crowd of protestors heading to parliament today for no-confidence motion against PM :)

End up, who were creating problems in busy metropolitan city this morning? I’m sure a lot of drivers and motorists were swearing all the way in the traffic, especially those who were rushing for important appointment.

Dear BN government, could you please focus your attention in the hot-like-frying-pan issues resulted from fuel price hike aftermaths which are troubling the average Malaysians? Defend as you like, as if majority of Malaysians are enjoying sufficient spending power to comfortably greet and welcome the financial burdens introduced to us after the recent fuel price hike. Almost Legally Owned the House

My girlfriend told me this morning, that the stamp duty is processed, and the sales & purchase agreement is also sealed by seller through our individual lawyers. For a moment, I was very happy. ‘Cos it means that we almost legally own the house already, as far as legal processing and matters are concerned. FYI, the legal processes started in early May.

Why do I say “almost”?? hehe.. ‘cos the house is not yet paid!

So, for the next second, the joyous feel is overwritten by money matters haha. The journey of digging out substantial amount of cash has officially begun. House renovation is the most painful part.

Now, the first party to pay is lawyer - RM3175, for all the legal services.

Java VisualVM is Now Bundled with JDK6 Update 7

Java SE 6 has already been released for quite some time (ya… now already update 7 looo). Even though many monitoring and diagnostics features are enhanced and introduced in Java 6, but it has been lacking an out-of-the-box bundling of a convincing visual Java application monitoring or profiling tool, until the most recent JDK6 Update 7.

In this latest update of JDK 6 (version 6u7), the Java VisualVM - a visual tool integrating several lightweight profiling capabilities for troubleshooting Java applications, is bundled. After installation of JDK 6u7, you can find jvisualvm.exe in the /bin folder. By the way, VisualVM is similar to JConsole to certain extends, but a lot better than JConsole.

You might have heard of JProfiler, or even have some first-hand experiences with it. No doubt it’s an comprehensive Java application profiler, but it comes with a price tag :) Java VisualVM is FREE, free like a free beer!

How to take advantage with Java VisualVM?

Java VisualVM

Firstly, in order to benefit from the full profiling advantage of Java VisualVM, you must run your Java application on JVM 6. No worry, you can also compile your codes with Java 5 compatibility, and run the application on JVM 6, so that it is profilable by VisualVM.

For all applications running on JVM 6, you will be able to create CPU and memory profiler, take thread dumps, browse heap dumps, and more. For applications running on JVM 5, the most that you can monitor with VisualVM, is only the threads. Click here for more details on Java VisualVM features. Peninsula Trip Part 2 – Day 2: Merang Beach

Continue from:
Peninsula Trip Part 2 – Introduction
Day 1: Kuala Lipis, Gua Musang
Day 1: Kota Bharu
Day 2: Kota Bharu

After leaving the Kota Bharu pulut tapai cendol at 2.39:50pm, we were heading southward to the beautiful coastline of Terengganu – Merang. There was quite a heavy traffic, and it took us about 20 minutes to get out from Kota Bharu town. Just the 565m stretch of Jalan Pengkalan Chepa and we have spent 6 minutes 43 seconds.

After crossing the Kelantan-Terengganu border, we came to Besut district, which backdated my memory to 3 years ago, when I was boarding a boat to Pulau Perhentian with my university coursemates from Kuala Besut jetty.

Along the way from Kota Bharu to Merang

When we were approaching Setiu district at around 5.10pm, the journey was getting more excited. Why? Cos after a long stretch of dull trunk mainly surrounded by oil palm estates, we finally started to head towards the eastern coastline. In other words, we were getting a lot closer to see the sea!!!

We started to sing some songs in the cars, picking up some titles which are related to the blue sea. Soon, we were driving along the Penarik Beach, and I started to feel it as the real city-escape vacation.

Merang Beach and Kembara Resort, Terengganu

Finally, at 5.42:11pm, we have officially declared our arrival at Merang, better known as the gateway to Pulau Redang and Pulang Lang Tengah. Merang Beach is described as the most beautiful coastline of Terengganu. Its long sandy beach and stretches of tall coconut trees and sparkling crystal clear sea water is making Pantai Merang a good stop to enjoy the sea breeze.

Kembara Resort, Merang

Then, we headed to the first paid accommodation of our makan trip – Kembara Resort, which is a budget accommodation of kampung style chalets by the Merang Beach.

OK, let me think how I should fairly comment Kembara Resort. Hm.. the wooden kampung style chalets, which have accommodated us with 4 in a room, doesn’t really meet overall hygienic requirement. Firstly, the room floor was sandy, the bed sheets were not satisfyingly clean, and the washroom (individual washroom for each chalet) condition was.. erm.. not really well maintained as the pipe was leaking, making the washroom floor all-time wet and sandy, yet without proper dissemination. I don’t mind staying in any budget or backpacker’s lodge, but as long as the basic cleanliness and hygiene requirements are met. Continue reading ‘Peninsula Trip Part 2 – Day 2: Merang Beach’

Peninsula Trip Part 2 – Day 2: Kota Bharu

Continue from:
Peninsula Trip Part 2 – Introduction
Day 1: Kuala Lipis, Gua Musang
Day 1: Kota Bharu

In the first day, we have traveled from KL to the very northeast of Peninsula Malaysia. The journey began from the heart of Malaysia economic development (Kuala Lumpur), to a state enriched with forestry resources (Pahang), and then hooking at the first Islamic state of Malaysia (Kelantan). The surrounding environment of our route changes from metropolitan city, to misty greenery, picturesque limestone caves, and finally signboards of Jawi letters.

Green view greeting the morning

From second day onwards, our plan was to start heading southwards, along the east coast. By 8am, all of us have already waked up from the comfortable beds at Ah Fai’s house. Surrounding us was a green misty scene.

Breakfast at White House Kopitiam

Wow~~! What a big pleasure. We were at the White House for breakfast!

“Ya ya.. I don’t bluff you one.. we had breakfast at White House. Yes again, if you didn’t hear me right; I’m saying White House Kopitiam”

at White House Kopitiam

Located at Jalan Sultanah Zainab, White House Kopitiam is found opposite the Padang Merdeka, and beside the State Museum. Owned by a Chinese old man, but this is a Halal dining place. Apparently, this kopitiam is quite “wai sui”, very famous in Kota Bharu. It was full of crowd during our visit on Sunday morning.

Toasted breads at at White House Kopitiam

Coffee at White House Kopitiam

White House Kopitiam is known for its toasted breads, half boiled eggs, nasi dagang and nasi lauk. Frankly speaking, the toasted bread at Kuala Lipis Tongkok Hotel is much better than White House Kopitiam. Though satisfying, but the color of kaya spread served at White House Kopitiam, told me that it wasn’t made from authentic kaya recipe. Authentic kaya should be light brown in color; not dark brown, not green, and not yellow.

Half boiled eggs at at White House Kopitiam

The half boiled eggs served have passed my benchmark – yolks were really half boiled and egg white was slightly congealed. However, out of 7 sets of half boiled eggs served, there was 1 set with broken yolks. By right, to upkeep the kopitiam’s reputation, they shouldn’t even serve it out, if yolk was broken. True enough, not everyone minds about broken yolk; but people like me who prefer to swallow the yolk in one mouth-full style, really mind about broken yolk. (of course I wasn’t the one to take the set of broken yolks lo :p)

White House Kopitiam

According to Ah Fai, the local Chinese Kelantanese have other better preferred kopitiams. So in other words, we kind of ended up in a more touristic kopitiam la hehe. The bill was on pricey side. If I have to pay KL price in Kota Bharu, isn’t this considered pricey? I know I don’t have to pay KL price when dining in Melaka kopitiam. Me and Google Search Appliance

Me with the Google Search Appliance

This picture was taken on 16th June with my Sony Ericsson P1i. It was the day when the Google Cheese Search Appliance (GSA) arrived at my office. I’ve been keeping this picture for weeks, and not planning to hao lian 好恋, until I’m “inspired” by Jason Lioh’s latest post. hahaha

After been using Google web search for so long, this is the very first time, my colleagues and I have a chance to see, touch, test and molest the set of Google search hardware, software and algorithm designed specifically for enterprise use. This is a loan unit we got from Ingram Micro to on search integration with our flagship product.

Learn from Jason. Allow me to hao lian 好恋, can or not? haha

Withdrawn AdSense Earning with Western Union for the First Time

All the while before this, I was withdrawing my AdSense earning via cheque delivered to door step via snail mail, all the way from Mountain View USA to Malaysia. This method took me 3 weeks for cheque arrival, and 4 weeks for the cheque to be deposited into my CIMB Bank saving account. In other words, from the date when my AdSense earning was issued by Google, it took 7 weeks for me to get the payment.

Wah lao~~~ luckily I was never urgently in need for the AdSense earning, or else.. wait until siao haha

In early June, with advice from my friend, Loh, I’ve changed my AdSense payment method to Western Union.

CIMB Bank Western Union Withdrawal Form

And for the very first time, my AdSense earning finalized on 23rd June, is eligible for pick-up at any local Western Union agent, beginning from the day after payment date, hahahahah.

This morning I had an appointment in KLCC Petronas Twin Towers. So, I brought along the Money Transfer Control No. printed on the AdSense Payment Details page, filled up Western Union withdrawal form at CIMB Bank KLCC, presented my national identity card, and I got my payment in CASH from the authorized counter. They Are Leaving

I started my career with my present employer as the first job, on 2nd June 2005. Together with me who joined on the same day, is a MMU coursemate of mine - Ken Wei. Besides, we also have another MMU graduate of the same batch (but from different faculty), who joined a month earlier - Chee Wei.

So, 3 persons, same batch, started career with the same department in the same company. While Ken Wei and Chee Wei are developing their career as senior software engineer (they are like celebrity engineer in the company I tell you), but I made a switch (after 17 months) to pursue my career interest as system analyst (lucky enough to be offered an opportunity).

But today, we’re bidding farewell to Ken Wei. Not just that, we will also be bidding farewell to Chee Wei on coming Monday. Yes, buddies are leaving, to pursue their career interest at a higher peak. I was kinda sad and at the same time shocked, when I heard about their resignation 3 months ago (ya, our resignation notice is 3 months).

Foot steps

Well, everyone has a dream to pursue. “ALL THE BEST” friends! You both are the gems in the software development industry, will surely do well at higher peak.

Tomcat Context File “Mysteriously” Disappeared or Deleted

If you’ve done any Java web project deployment on Tomcat which involves NFS or SAN, you might have encountered a scenario where the Tomcat context file (\jakarta-tomcat\conf\Catalina\localhost\context.xml) mysteriously disappeared, especially after server restart.

Looks like it’s a Tomcat bug, you may refer to the Bugzilla record for further information.

This issue will only happen if the physical location of the web folder is different from Tomcat. For example, the Tomcat context could be configured with docBase residing in remote storage such as SAN or NFS.

When Tomcat detected that the web folder specified in docBase is not reachable, such as during storage server restart or network disruption, then the context file will be automatically deleted. Some may call it a feature though :p

How to Resolve in Linux?

In Linux, you can issue the following command to make the context file immutable. It’s like giving it “power overwhelming” StarCraft cheat…. will never die hahahaha

chattr +i /opt/jakarta-tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost/ROOT.xml

Please change the location path accordingly.

chattr +i is to make the file immutable, it can’t even be deleted by root user.

If you try rm /opt/jakarta-tomcat/conf/Catalina/localhost/ROOT.xml, you will get “Operation not permitted”… wah really never die

What if one day, you decided to remove its immutable status??

Instead of chattr +i, just use chattr -i will do

Sorry but I don’t have solution for Windows yet.

Anyone with better alternatives?

Not a Good Record - 18 Hours in Office

After 3 years in the workforce, I’ve set the highest personal OT record yesterday. Went into office at 8am (23 Jun), and left today early morning at 2am (24 Jun), a total of 18 hours. Minus out 2 hours of breakfast, lunch and dinner time, I had a total of 16 productive hours… holy cow… that’s 2 mandays!

Slept for 5 hours, woke up and went into office again at 8am this morning. But I didn’t start work at 8am la hehe.. went down for 1-hour breakfast with Jack, KC and Edwin. And now, 8pm, I’ve just done my work @-)

I’ve been superbly busy recently. A huge project is coming very close to the first deployment. There are a total of 36 deployments for this project.

So, to my friends whom I’ve ignored your instant messaging chat recently, please bear with me and accept my apology :p

Well, to be frank, my job is actually not as hectic as this. In fact, very much satisfying; it’s my first job since graduation. This is just a temporal surge of work load, due to tight project schedule and the technical complexities involved. Most of the time, things are very well manageable. So, no worry friends, especially my dear bao bei :D

Now, I hope there’s an accompany for a decent dinner. But somehow, I think I’ll be ending up eating alone instead.
